CONDORCET’S TENTH STAGE

A cardinal tenet of the Enlightenment was that, thanks to the Enlightenment itself, mankind had reached a point where reason was no longer in any danger of disappearing. A corner had been turned, and there was no going back to the Dark Ages. Reason, once it had shone forth in the world, could never again be eclipsed. Though the cultures of reason established in the ancient world—the Greeks, the Romans—may have been overwhelmed by barbarism, superstition, prejudice, and folly, this could never occur again. History, instead of cycling back and forth, would now have a straightforward trajectory.
